About Us
Killowen Primary School and Nursery Unit is situated to the west of Lisburn, off the Laurelhill Road in a pleasant, suburban setting. It shares a large campus with Laurelhill Community College and has access to the adjacent astroturf and gravel pitches. The attractive and extensive grounds provide ample space for children to play and learn and are enhanced by an outdoor play area with outdoor classroom, wildlife garden, poly tunnel and vegetable plot. We are holders of the ECO Schools Green Flag, have been awarded the Primary Science Quality Mark for excellence in science teaching and learning, the Sustrans Silver Mark Award and in September 2020 the school was awarded School of Sanctuary status.
The school is made up of 450 pupils from nursery to P7 who live in close proximity to the school and further afield. Children come from a wide range of traditions and cultures and are welcomed, respected and nurtured together.
The renovated accommodation comprises a two-storey, red brick, permanent building, housing 14 class units, assembly hall, library, learning support rooms, sensory room, dining hall and meals kitchen. An I.C.T suite houses thirty computers which form a school wide network incorporating computers and iPads in each classroom.
A Nursery Unit, next to the main building, caters for 52 pupils on a part-time basis.
The staffing for the current year is Principal plus 17 teachers and two part-time Learning Support teachers as well as a non-teaching Vice Principal. A member of staff also acts as a Liaison teacher between school and our Service families. A group of 20 classroom assistants support pupils throughout the school. All members of staff work closely together to create a warm and friendly welcome for pupils and their parents.
Killowen Primary School’s value and vision statement is ‘Explore Excite Excel.’ The school aims to provide a happy, stimulating and secure environment where each pupil can develop their full potential, intellectually, physically, socially and morally.
The provision of a broad and balanced enquiry led curriculum tailored to meet the individual needs of each child is coupled with a strong emphasis on pastoral care. The development of confidence, self-esteem, consideration for others and good manners is actively fostered. Pupils are expected to attain a high standard in all areas of school life and good attendance, punctuality and behaviour are the norm. All pupils wear school uniform.
Educational visits to places of local interest are undertaken as valuable extensions of the curriculum. P6 and P7 pupils enjoy residential field trips to the Mournes. A wide range of extra-curricular activities is on offer, this year these include Football, Hockey for boys and girls, Netball, Drama, Rugby, Ju-Jitsu, Eco club, Cookery, French, Scripture Union, Technology and Art & Craft activities.
The range of activities is extended in the Summer Term with a Clubs afternoon for P4-P7 children. Tag Rugby, Cricket, Gardening, Athletics and Cycling Proficiency are among the many activities on offer. Swimming is available for Primary 5, 6 & 7 pupils.
Instrumental tuition is provided by local music teachers and the school orchestra and choir perform at special events.
The school enjoys an excellent tradition of parental support and parents are encouraged to play an active part in their child’s education by keeping in close contact with the school. An extremely active Parent/Teacher Association organises both social and fund raising events for pupils and parents, and is very well supported.
The members of the Board of Governors take an active interest in all aspects of school life and strongly support the work of the staff.
